News Flash! (The Digital DJ Revolution)

Expert Author Darren Graham

HI DJ Atom Here,

I have been DJ'ing for the past 7 years and have seen dj's and the technology change dramatically in that time. For instance when I began DJ'ing the height of technology was a pair of Technic 1210 mk5 and a Pioneer DJM700. I mean that's what the top dog dj's had and boy did it cost a lot, if I remember correctly the decks were between £800-900, DJM mixer was £700 and that not including the Ortofon styluses at around £100 each! You literally had to sell you gran and swap you dog to get these plus put in about 1257 hours at your local McDonalds to get a set up like this!

And what for a set that allowed you to mix two tracks and add a couple of effects!!! But back then that's what moved crowds, built dj's reps and invoked the euphoric feeling on the dance floor!

But after hitting a few local so called "hot spots" recently I found it like stepping back in time literally. Well we all know currently 80's fashion is the in thing and you can move in clubs for girls in figure hugging chiffon, shoulder padded dresses and back combed hair, with flu-resent earrings, but that I get and understand, and if I'm honest approve of!! However when taking a sneak peak behind the DJ booth to find the DJ still using Vinyl really scared me!
Were in the year 2010, and these lazy dj's are still using vinyl. I mean Jesus, they must spend more of their vinyl digging time trying to find a vinyl shop these days! But that isn't what really puzzles me, it's how they intend to take a crowd on a magical, musical, roller-coaster ride for 4+ hours. Now I know back in the day we did it because that's all we had, but that's all the crowd knew also. Today however crowds going to Ibiza, Miami, Chicago or not even the big clubs just the major clubs in their local city must be hearing these new ways to dj and new equipment allowing DJ's to create ground breaking sets, surly???

I'm afraid you're wrong, the DJ booth I referred to earlier, was in a major club in Manchester, England!

Personally as a DJ I Make it my business to make sure every set I deliver leave a crowd feeling that I have hand crafted that set, and literally read their minds as to what tunes they wanted and taken down a twisty path until they reach musical euphoria! But yet these so called "it" DJ's haven't even got the decency to trow in a cheeky live remix, to this crowd paying their wages, it sickened me!

I think as a DJ we should be playing track differently to what people are used to hearing them, we should be making sure that the local artists are represented as much as the international ones and we should at the very least be making sure we have the enthusiasm to want to make each and every set the best we can. I was recently listening to an interview with Jazzy Jeff and he said, back in the day when he would dj and house parties and BBQ's, DJ's would just play the best music around. There wouldn't be this I'm a hip-hop dj or I'm a dance DJ. Back then DJ's we dj's and they just created a vibe that allowed people to enjoy themselves and I feel that's what the DJ's of today need to inject back into their sets!

So my new quest has begun and I have chosen my weapon of choice! My mission I have chosen to except is the literally wipe the Luddite/Lazy dj's of the face of the earth by educating the masses on what they should be expecting from a DJ. Ahh and my weapon I hear you ask.... Well to find that secret out I suggest you click the link below and all will be revealed!
