Negativity Isn't Practical

Expert Author Ray Whittaker

Every now and then you'll come across one of those people... You know the type; whatever your dreams, hopes or desires, they will tear them down; attempt to destroy every positive thought you ever had or ridicule you for being 'unrealistic'. Sometimes, people have the best of intentions for trying to pull you back from your dreams. People who really love you and don't want to see you hurt or disappointed will tell you don't go for that, it's too much, what if you fail? Even though we all know that if you don't attempt something, you can never succeed at it. Nevertheless, some people will still tell you not to try; 'you should be sensible, practical... keep your feet on the ground and your head out of the clouds'. But ask yourself; is that really sensible advice?

Advocates of this 'practical and sensible' advice will tell us that positive thinkers are just dreamers who spend their lives deluding themselves. They will argue that their pragmatic approach to life is much more realistic. But I'm not so sure about that. I think they are just more cynical. I guess that maybe they're right on one sense, maybe I, and people like me are dreamers but we're in damn good company... Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi, Thomas Edison (I could go on!) were all dreamers who dreamed big dreams and took the action to achieve them.

Anything, of any worth, that was ever achieved by mankind was first dreamed up in the mind of a dreamer. Every creation of man was created twice; first in the imagination of the creator then in the physical world. I'm pretty sure none of this ever happened from a negative viewpoint. I don't know of anyone who ever said 'I don't believe that this is possible' then went ahead and did it anyway.

So who then are the true realists? The people who are stuck in a rut; who accept the status quo because they are too afraid to step out of their comfort zone? Or the dreamers who will take any opportunity to advance in any way that will improve life; for themselves and the people around them? And which category do you fall into? It's your choice!
