Sweet Itch

Although the technical name is Culicoides Hypersensitivity, most know this common ailment for horses as Sweet Itch or Summer Itch. Sweet itch is a medical condition that many horses face caused by an allergic response to the bites of Culicoides midges or flies. Found commonly in British horses, it can also be found in equines of Canada, the United States and Australia.

Biting midges, gnats, punkies, and sand flies are the main cause of sweet itch and can be very difficult to prevent because these types of insects are almost invisible to the naked eye. After they bite the animal, the horse develops an allergic reaction which can be very strong. Sweet itch may start out simply with just the itching but can turn in to open sores on the body, often weeping at times. These sores are caused by the rubbing and the biting the horse does to stop the itching that it feels. The biting of the insects can also cause lesions immediately or over time as the horse continues to try to relieve the itch it feels.

These midges can be found in any wet or swampy area but any small body of water can cause a group of these insects to breed, making it difficult to prevent. Short of draining any water from the ground, it is nearly impossible to get rid of them completely which is why it is so important to treat sweet itch year round before it can cause pain to the horse.

Treating Sweet Itch with Neem

Prevention starts with Neem Aid fly repellent that can be used daily if your horse is susceptible to sweet itch. Also, the horses themselves should be moved away from any areas that have a midge infestation. If you already know that your horses have a hypersensitivity to insect bites such as these it is important to keep Neem Oil on hand to stop the horse from itching before they develop sores that can be bothersome.

Used as a barrier, you can wipe the horse down with Neem oil or apply it to the most prevalent areas before they are bitten so that it can stop the bites completely. If the horse has been bitten, Neem oil can be placed directly on the itchy spots to relieve the itch. The anti-inflammatory properties of Neem oil will relieve the need for scratching and biting, stopping the horse from developing any infection later on.
