If you are experiencing a pain in the neck--other than one of your teenagers--you want to find neck pain relief as soon as possible.
Neck pain might be induced by a sudden neck motion such as a whip-lashing event or making a sudden head-turning motion while engaged in a sport (or even just a casual movement), falling down and landing awkwardly, or sleeping in a funny position or on an overly-stuffed pillow. Neck pain could also be induced by a pinched nerve in your shoulder or upper spine.
The neck is one of the most sensitive areas of the body. It is sensitive nerve-ending wise, and sensitive as in a flexible, vulnerable part of the body. After all, if your neck breaks, you die. Strong pressure placed on the front of your neck for only a couple of minutes at one time will kill you, too.
How can you give yourself neck pain relief?
Put cold, as ice cubes in a towel or in some other vessel, on the sore area repeatedly and periodically for 48 to 72 hours. Pain, muscle spasms, or swelling should be reduced by this. If you find that the problem resides near the shoulder or the upper back, ice the back of your neck. You can also try ice massage by massaging your ice into the painful area for five to 10 minutes, basically enough to numb any pain. Once the pain feels numbed, remove the ice so that you don't do yourself harm in any other way through overexposure.
You might experience swelling in the neck. If you do, avoid or minimize anything that can possibly cause more inflammation for 48 hours. These things include alcoholic beverage consumption, caffeine consumption, use of tobacco, and hot showers. If you have swelling, also use a product like Icy Hot or apply alternative heat and cold to the area in question. Each application should be for about 10 minutes, and you should do the alternating applications three times per day.
Try sleeping in a flatter position. Don't put a crimp in your neck in the night by lying with your head on a too-steeply-angled pillow.
As counterintuitive as it might seem, you should actually get back to daily routines and normal work schedule as soon as possible. When it comes to neck pain and possible neck injuries, if you let it sit it seems to get worse. This doesn't mean jerk your neck around or otherwise stress it in the first few days; it means getting yourself back into your routine will actually stimulate you and keep your neck flexible and supple, so that you encourage healing and future prevention of pain and injury.
Massage your neck, and you may find it helps to use some kind of cream or massage oil here. However, if you massage your neck and you experience worse pain, get an appointment with your doctor.
Neck pain relief is something you'll need and want to find immediately.
