One of the most hardest things to do for those of us who are overweight seems to be to lose weight. It always feels like pushing a real heavy rock uphill! I tried several diets and diet fads trying to get rid of extra weight that just didn't want to budge from my body.
Its not really a secret how to lose weight. You just have to burn off more calories than you take in. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done. There are also a myriad of ways, diets, methods, techniques, exercises, and even meditations that one can employ to help you accomplish this task of losing weight. Then, once you lose it, if you lose it, it seems even harder to keep it off! I know, because I fell into this very same vicious cycle. So which way should you go? Simple! I used a method which is best suited for me and so should you. I like to use the "education" method. I wanted to educate myself all about the body, how it uses calories, and so forth as it pertains to weight management, not weight loss.
But what really threw me for a loop was that a lot of the obvious stuff we all hear about wasn't the reason I was fat at all! Sometimes, a lot of the things we strive for is the wrong thing. For me, I was trying to "lose" weight when I should have been trying to manage it instead. In doing so, I dropped weight as a kind of side effect. I found out the REAL reason I was fat to begin with and this changed everything. I stopped focusing on the wrong things and began to focus on what the cause really was. This is paramount to success in weight loss and management. I mention how management is important because you will not only want to lose weight but keep it off for good. That only comes with good management habits.
Some other things I found out was that I could lose weight without diets, getting up at the brink of dawn to jog down the street, drinking whole eggs, going hungry most of the time, and making yourself miserable. You can even still, and should, eat your favorite meals!
If you are going to use a weight loss/diet program, here are a few things I learned when choosing this route:
1. Don't follow diets which require you to stay away from whole food types, like your carbs and proteins. The truth is, your body needs carbohydrates and diets telling you to cut out these important foods is dangerous to your health. The same goes for cutting out proteins from your diet. The key is moderation.
2. Be wary of programs that don't promote exercise as a regular part of your routine. What you eat is important but keeping yourself fit is also important. Building and maintaining muscle burns 3 times the calories. I incorporated exercise as well as good nutrition.
3. Avoid programs that don't consider the mental and/or emotional side of weight gain. This is a very important point because there is a psychological reason as to why you became over weight in the first place. I made a conscious decision that I didn't want to be overweight anymore and this was the beginning and motivation to my weight loss. You can do the same!
