N gauge trains are one of the most popular choices for model railroading. Typically half the size of its HO counterpart, hobbyists are able to add more track and create a more elaborate layout. It can also be used in with other sizes to create a look of distance and add to the dimensions of the set up. Whether new to the world of model trains or someone looking for a new challenge, working with this size is truly rewarding.
Because of its smaller size, (the distance between the two rails on the track is 9mm) this train type is continually growing in popularity. Some people lack the space to create larger sized models and opt for the N train models to fit inside their homes. Others are just looking to create a more detailed display and the smaller size frees up room for so many more parts and accessories. No matter the reason, this size works well on a variety of levels.
When purchasing parts for this type of a set, be sure to look and see where the parts were manufactured. In Europe, the MOROP is the standard for this type of model, but the United States follows the NMRA (National Model Railroad Association). Both groups work closely together to try and create a perfect compatibility, but this trains popularity makes that next to impossible. For example, in Japan, the ratio is 1:150 but in Europe, the ratio is 1:160. While the difference seems minuscule, there are some pieces of a set that will not fit well together. It may take some time to work them together.
N gauge trains have become a centerpiece of the model train hobby. No detail is given up in the smaller size and the amount of work that goes into each piece is up to the individual. Also, while lighter in weight, this scale of train does not give up the the look of its larger counterpart when weathering and aging details are added. It is possible to give each part an authentic feel and when completed, it makes for an amazing creation of this size put together.
