Every website consists of files that are stored on the web server. This is a machine that can fail. Good hosting companies use reliable servers with backups but they can not and usually do not guarantee 100% up-time or 100% reliable storage for the files. Even with regular backups the hosting company is doing you can not be 100% sure that after some major failure everything will work as expected. You can only count on your backups.

Making a backup of any website is pretty simple. All you have to do is to download all the files and create a backup copy of all the databases the website uses. The files can be downloaded with any FTP client. Depending on the CMS used for the website this downloading may take some time. A much better solution is to compress all the files on the server side and then to download this compressed archive file. If you have access to the cPanel or similar hosing console with file explorer you can compress the whole directory with only few clicks. Making a database backup is also pretty simple. The easiest way is to use phpMyAdmin or similar database management application where you simply export the database into a file which is downloaded to a local computer.

Manual backups always work and all you need is a systematic approach and some time. However, most popular content management systems like WordPress or Joomla provide a better, more automated method for backups.

Joomla has an excellent extension called Akeeba backup. This is a Joomla component that can create a complete installation file which can be used to recreate the website at any web server. All you have to do is to start the backup process and then when it is finished you download the archive file to a safe place. The restoration process is identical to the original Joomla installation procedure--you are guided from the first to the last step of installation. An additional benefit of using Akeeba backup for Joomla websites is a small desktop application called Akeeba Remote Control. This is the final step in total scheduled backup automation.
