There's a serious lack of music business knowledge being shared these days. Many musicians think they just have to worry about their social networking activities and their sales will take care of themselves. If you've been involved in the music scene for any number of years though, you'll realise that isn't the case. While social networking is an important part of taking a musician's career off the ground, it's not a stand alone method for success, and needs to be implemented alongside other proven long-term methods. So what is one of the main methods I'm talking about?
Email marketing! If you haven't been email marketing, you're potentially losing out on a lot of money!
I'm sure a lot of you may know what this is, but for those that don't I'll tell you. Email marketing is the process of collecting people's email addresses and marketing to their owners. This isn't as robotic as it sounds however, as while you're sending emails to these people, you're actually building up a relationship with them and making them trust you. Then when you have a product launch, the people on your list will hopefully like you enough and purchase your music or at least help spread the word.
So why is email marketing so effective?
Well, for one you'll always have your lists. Popular websites come and go (MySpace anyone?), and while all the "friends" you had on those websites become useless as the site becomes less popular, your mailing list will always be around. Mailing list are also effective as they collect email addresses. You may think "It's only an email", but think again. People's email addresses are their central point online, without your email you wouldn't have a Facebook account, your wouldn't have a Twitter account, heck, you wouldn't even have a Ezine account! People always check their emails, so you've direct access to them all the time.
