For the person considering a position in the field of criminal justice, there are several options besides the position of police officer. Some jobs in the criminal justice field include paralegal, court reporter, FBI agent, or even a position such as a bailiff. In order to decide which position to choose, it is a good idea to look at them to see what each job entails.

Paralegal

A paralegal helps prepare for trials and hearings, as well as assisting lawyers with research. While this may seem like a simple position, paralegals are required to be knowledgeable in the topics of criminal law and business law, as well as have knowledge of the field of law in general. While paralegals will have this knowledge, they are not allowed to argue before a jury, give advice, or charge legal fees for services.

Court Reporter

Court reporters take on the responsibility of recording all official words in a court case. While this may appear easy, they are often required to record at rates of 200 words per minute. Because it is not possible for any person to type at that rate, the court reporter must have excellent shorthand skills and be extremely fast on their feet. Errors committed by the court reporter could possibly result in criminals being released as a result of the "official" record being different than what was said in court or what was not said in court.

FBI agent

Anyone who wants to work as an FBI agent must have a Bachelors degree in their chosen field and have several years experience before they are eligible to work for the FBI. Candidates must also be between 25 and 36 years old. Previous police officer or military experience is extremely helpful. FBI, or Federal Bureau of Investigations, officers investigate such things as terrorism, federal fraud, federal crimes, and bribing officials. Many apply, few are chosen.

Bailiff

In the event of courtroom disruption, the bailiff is the one that restores order and apprehends the disruptive individual. Bailiffs also ensure that judges have all the correct files and everything they need to do their job. Bailiffs also announce courtroom rules, enforce the courtroom rules and announce the arrival of the judge into the courtroom.
