Bikes have come a long way since the day when I dabbled locally with a bit of road racing, I was in my late teens so we are talking a couple of decades ago almost. I remember when disc wheels and carbon frames first started to creep into the mainstream - well if you had a few grand kicking around to spend on something which back then would snap if you sneezed on it.
It surprises me that most of the names from back then are still floating around, I mean the likes of Shimano, Suntour, Mavic, Campagnola and so on.
I know from back then that North Norfolk has more hills per square mile than a lot of people give us credit for. A Norfolk Hill Climb Time Trial event I came placed in was held at West Runton - that hill is a killer, short and steep.
So I reckon there is some mileage to be had in Mountain Biking in Norfolk - if permission can be gained to access some of the private hilly terrain. Promoting mountain biking in Norfolk is on par with selling mountaineering equipment to someone living in Amsterdam but I think it will generate tourism. If only the National Trust, Local Councils, Forestry Commission and private land owners could get together and designate some dedicated mountain biking routes!
There are plenty of hills around Holt especially and along the North Norfolk ridge as far as Mundesley and Overstrand - lets hope some of the land owners turn a blind eye rather than picking up the shotgun.
There is fun to be had in them there wooded hills in Norfolk!!
