Motorcyclists Need to Cover Themselves and Not Just With Expensive Leathers

Expert Author Charlotte J Wilson

Motorbikes are by all accounts exhilarating machines, but by their very nature, they can also be incredibly dangerous and that's exactly why it's so crucial to make sure you and your machine are adequately covered.

Now, I don't mean your motorbike needs to have a cover over it in bad weather and neither am I am referring to a good helmet and an expensive pairs of leathers. Yes, leathers and a helmet will offer you a vast amount of protection if you're ever involved in an accident, but they will only offer you physical protection and if your bike got damaged, you'd also want to know you have financial protection as well.

Many bike enthusiasts get so caught up in the moment when they go out and purchase a new bike, that they tend to overlook the fact that they'll need insurance and that they should ideally have a policy which offers them the maximum amount of cover. Of course you can go and take out the cheapest form of cover, which by the way, is known as 'third party, fire and theft', but this could essentially leave you high and dry if you're ever unfortunate enough to be involved in a serious accident.

Yes, your insurance company will pay for any damage caused to someone else's bike or car and they will pay out if the person you hit has been injured. Unfortunately however, that's where it all ends, because they're certainly not going to pay for your bike to be repaired or replaced.

If you've gone ahead and purchased an old banger, then it probably won't be too much of a loss for you if your bike is a write-off, but if you've gone and spent thousands of pounds on a brand new machine, you'd hate to know that it's gone and that you cannot even afford to replace it. The only way to avoid a situation like this would be for you to opt for 'fully comprehensive' bike insurance. This would at least give you peace of mind in knowing that you have the maximum level of protection.

Not only will you be covered for any damage you've caused to a third party, but your own bike will also be fully covered. In other words, if the bike gets damaged beyond repair, you'll automatically receive enough compensation so that you can replace it with a new one. Don't forget, it doesn't take much of a collision to destroy a motorbike. After all, apart from the frame and the motor, practically everything else is made from one type of plastic or another nowadays. Even if a bike can be repaired, it usually involves replacing many parts and accessories and even this can run into thousands of pounds.

To a great extent, motorbike owners had every reason to opt for the most basic type of bike insurance in years gone by, simply because it used to cost a fortune to insure motorbikes in the UK. Considering that this is no longer the case, motorbike owners can for the most part take advantage of lower rates in order to ensure they have the best possible level of protection. After all, it's not just your motorbike that's at stake, but instead, it's your life as well.
