Motocross is one of the fastest and exhilarating sports in the world. With big names in the sport like Travis Pastrana, becoming well known celebrities. The competitive nature of the sport, with everyone pushing for faster and bigger tricks, means that it is going to continue to push forward.
This therefore means that the safety and protective gear for motocross will have to develop as fast in order to keep up with rapidly developing times. Neck braces are now common place, but they weren't really even just a few years ago. No doubt more advanced technology will be developed to help keep riders safe, but the one piece of equipment which is so paramount is the motocross helmet.
There are three types of helmets: full face, open face helmets and half face helmets. Experts will always recommend using helmets for any on or off road pursuits regardless of the perceived danger levels. This is because it will only take a small knock on the head or upper neck to do serious damage.
Unlike the half face helmets, which only cover the head and not the face, the full face helmets are much better for motocross. Whilst they might seem a lot more cumbersome, they offer a lot more protection. They offer the chin and jaw more protection as the helmet wraps around. This style of helmet will then actually offer check bone protection as well, as even falling face first one fairly level ground would mean that the face shouldn't come into direct contact with the floor.
It is important to remember when buying a motocross helmet that its fit should be very snug. This is because in the event of a fall you don't want your head to move so much that it could hit off the inside of the helmet adding further damage to the skull. The chin strap should be done up tightly so that there is no/minimum movement of your head inside.
One point to note is that the cushion in the lining will over time compress, so a new helmet will feel tighter than it will after a few session riding with it on. Another point to note is that a second hand helmet may well be useless as if it is cracked in the inner lining of the helmet then it may not provide enough cushioning for your head in a fall.
