Mosque at Ground Zero

Expert Author James McMorris

The Mosque at ground zero has received a great deal of publicity recently. It is disconcerting when one considers that the Muslims over the last 2000 years have made a practice of building a Mosque over a religious site of their conquered foes. How much weight would a ground zero Mosque have on the rest of the Muslim world? Would they believe we have been conquered? Does it matter what the rest of the Muslim world thinks? Perhaps the only thing that is really important is how we feel, and the families of those who died on 9-11 feel, about the Mosque.

Some have made an issue of the funding source; frankly, I do not see that as being very important. I suspect Iran and Saudi Arabia will be supplying the funds no matter what the developer says. I also feel that in the United States anyone should be allowed to build their religious building, as long as it meets the proper building codes, anywhere they wish. However, if the people behind the building a Mosque at ground zero are really attempting to unify the people and different religions, as some claim, I suggest that they make a point of saying they have every right to build their Mosque at ground zero, but if so many are opposed to that site, would someone suggest a site that would be acceptable. They might also help in the rebuilding of the Greek Orthodox Church that was destroyed on 9-11.

We in the United States believe in freedom of religion, however, those of the Muslim faith must realize that freedom is a two edged sword. Not only does it allow anyone to join any church/religion they wish, it also allows anyone to leave any church/religion they wish. Those Imam's who preach that leaving the Muslim faith requires a penalty of death, or those who advocate honor killings, should be considered as guilty of the murder as any of their flock who commit the act.

Multiple spouses are against the law in the United States. What is going happen, perhaps it has already, when a family moves to the United States that is practicing the Muslim faith of more than one wife? Is that family to be deported? Perhaps they should never be allowed to enter the United States? Let one wife relocate here with her husband and not allow the other wife's to enter the country? This, of course, would destroy the family unit.

What about the relationship between husband and wife as defined by the Muslim faith? Most certainly there are areas that do not match the law as defined by the laws of the United States.

Even now, there are Muslim leaders that want Islamic law to replace the current law of the United States.

I fear the Mosque at ground zero is just the very tip of the ice berg concerning the Muslim faith.
