Morning Sickness - 10 Things You Need to Know

If you're pregnant, or know someone who is, then perhaps you're well aware of morning sickness. If you don't know a lot about it, here's what you need to know.
1. Many women suffer from morning sickness during their pregnancy, and approximately 8 out of 10 women will suffer from regular nausea during pregnancy.
2. Perhaps unsurprisingly, nausea is one of the most common symptoms of pregnancy.
3. Not every woman is affected by nausea during pregnancy, and the severity will also vary from woman to woman. You might be feeling fine, whilst a pregnant friend might be suffering quite badly
4. As well as first thing in the morning, the nausea can strike at any time during the day and the evening, and so early in your pregnancy can be an unpleasant time. If it lasts for a long time it can mean that you're unable to do other things, such as work, or look after your other children.
5. Certain smells can trigger nausea, especially in pregnancy. The smell of coffee is one of the most common culprits. If smells are making you feel sick, perhaps you might want to see if your family will stop drinking coffee, or wearing perfumes and avoid areas where people are smoking. Remedies that work for travel sickness can work for this type of nausea, and there are also lots of other morning sickness remedies that you might want to try.
6. For many mothers to be, morning sickness is horrible, but not the end of the world. For others though, It can be serious, as they are unable to keep food and drink down, and are losing weight. If this sounds like you, then it is best to seek medical advice sooner rather than later.
7. You needn't worry that your sickness might be harming your baby's development, because the nutrients your baby needs are stored in your liver. In addition, you might want to consider taking a pregnancy multivitamin, and talking to your midwife.
8. it should be remembered that even though you might be feeling terrible, nausea is a good sign that the pregnancy hormone levels are high, which means that your baby should be growing healthily.
9. Morning sickness usually starts at around 5-6 weeks and will often improve by around 12- 14 weeks. For some women though, it will last most of the way through pregnancy.
10. If you're worried in any way about your sickness, or have any other anxieties about your pregnancy, let your midwife or doctor know as soon as possible, as they're be able to reassure you.
