More About Ross-On-Wye Located in England

The small market town Ross-on-Wye is located in Herefordshire England. As you can tell by the name it's located on River Wye, and also near the Forest of Dean. In this area you can find many antique shops, and markets.

As with any town in the United Kingdom it's very rich in history. That's one of the wonderful things you will find if you travel overseas. Actually Ross-on-Wye is known as the place where Britain's tourist industry was born.

It was back in 1745 when Dr. John Egerton would start taking his friends on the river to the location. With the wonderful scenery that could be seen during the ride, it became very popular. Not only that but the castles and abbeys added so much more for people to see.

The first illustrated book for tours was published about this area in 1782 by William Gilpin. That made it even more popular and soon eight boats a day were making regular trips taking people to the spot. Each Thursday and Saturday you will find a market held in town.

Plus there are many historical buildings including the 700 year old church of St. Mary's. A beautiful architectural site with a spire on top. Many famous people would be buried in the area too, including William Rudhall.

Across from the church you will find a beautiful garden that will give you a very good view of the River, and the Black Mountains. West of Ross-on-Wye you will find what remains of Wilton Castle, and it's open to be visited too.

Another reminder of the past history is the Plaque Cross which can be found in the church yard. It is the memorial for those 315 people who died from the Black Death in 1637. Many historical locations are wonderful, and this is on top of the list of sites to see.
