Monthly Scrapbooking Clubs - Kits to Your Doorstep

Expert Author Lain Ehmann

There are a lot of forces working against the poor scrapbooker these days. Scrapbook stores are closing, big-box craft stores offer generic supplies, or only a few lines, and prices can be exorbitant. If you order online, it's not always clear if the items you select so carefully actually complement each other, or if the patterned paper that you thought was orange is actually more of a yellow, and therefore clashes horribly with the ribbon you ordered to match.

Then there's the whole idea of figuring out what to do with your purchases. Sometimes the hardest part of scrapbooking is figuring out where to start, or what to do with the products. Your creativity runs dry, and you're stuck.

That's where you can use monthly scrapbook clubs. Kits compiled by expert designers come with carefully selected patterned paper, cardstock, and embellishments, and are usually accompanied by lots of ideas for using your new scrapbook supplies. And because they're delivered right to your mailbox, you don't have to waste your precious scrapping time running from store to store or jumping to website after website, looking for the coordination products. What's not to like?

Before you run out and sign up for a monthly kit club, there are some questions you need to ask yourself:

  • How much am I willing to pay? The average scrapbooking kit club runs from $20-$30, plus shipping. They are not cheap, but they typically come with enough scrapbooking stuff to complete several layouts.

  • What kind of kit do I want? Some kits specialize in mini-albums, while others focus on cards, or altered projects, or straight scrapbook layouts. Know what you're looking for before you buy.

  • Do I want a one-time commitment, or a monthly subscription? Kit clubs vary as to whether you are required to sign up for a six-month or even year-long commitment, or if you can buy one kit at a time. Usually you pay more the shorter your subscription. Be sure you love what you're getting if you make a long-term agreement.

  • What if I don't like a kit? Most kits won't give you the option to skip a kit if you don't care for it, but some will. Check the details.

  • How do I cancel? Do you have to give 30 days' notice, or are you stuck for even longer? Read the fine print before you fork over your credit card number.
