Many people argue that Wicca is a 20th century neo-pagan faith, a new religion, while others say it has been around since the Ice Age, the old religion.
Wicca is actually both. Todays witches follow the traditions of old and are the shamans and healers of today. Witches practice sacred magic from the ancient art in today's world.
After Gerald Gardener's initiation by Dorothy Clutterbuck aka Old Dorothy, into a traditional British coven in 1939, Gerald published books about the beliefs of British Wiccans. He wrote of their practices because he feared the religion was going to die out. Doing this broke the coven's seal of secrecy but many people started converting to Wicca. This was the beginning of modern Wicca.
People still find it difficult to accept that witches are good and still are in fear of them. Witchcraft has adapted through time, but since the Burning Times, Witches are now learning to live openly once more. There is no blood sacrifices or harm to any living animal anymore. Witches respect all living beings and honor them.
Every Wiccan is a witch, but every witch is not Wiccan. Wiccan witches serve the Goddess in any way they see fit using their abilities and personal circumstances. Wiccans do whatever they please and decide for themselves how they conducted by obeying The Wiccan Rede.
Wicca is an Earth religion. Wiccans respect all people and are open minded to diversities and consider everyone to be children of the same Mother, regardless of race, ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation, gender or status. These diversities are not important to Wiccans.
There isn't a central organization or governing body and no supreme leader in Wicca. Wiccans temples are natural places of worship, be it a forest, beach, mountain, whatever, it really does not matter. Wicca is simply a collection of its witches with their beliefs and practices. Wiccans do not force anybody even their children to follow Wicca, they allow their children to decide for themselves if they choose to follow any religion. Being a child of a Wiccan witch does not mean they are automatically Wiccan, only if they choose to be. Many Wiccans wear a pentacle, mainly for protection. Wiccans choose their own lifestyle. Food is not restricted. Wiccans can eat meat or just be vegetarian. It is a free choice just as all of a Wiccans life. Wicca is becoming a popular worldwide faith. Wiccans never try to convert anybody to their beliefs and never knock on doors or ask for money.
Believing in Wicca is a way of life, an organic religion which celebrates Mother Nature.
Wicca is a happy religion. It is also a personal and positive celebration of life. Anybody can choose to become a Wiccan. There are just two rules, abide by The Wiccan Rede, and more importantly accept the Great Goddess into your life. Only then will you be ready to perform real magic.
