Model Train Sets - The Perfect Christmas Gift

Model train sets have been part of growing up for many generations. What Christmas tree has not had a one under it at some time in every family?

Assembling the railroad, building the models, and playing with model train sets helps children develop their minds and their senses while at the same time providing hours of pleasure. It's also an activity that can be enjoyed with the parents providing lots of opportunity for learning and relating together. Assembling them can be a time-consuming hobby and demands attention to detail and diligence in keeping everything in good working order, all good things to prepare them for life. It will also teach them the importance of hard work, determination, setting goals and achieving them and gain a sense of satisfaction from a job well done.

For a young child you want something that will be easy for them to handle and durable enough to stand up to wear and tear, and nothing meets those requirements like LEGO. LEGO train sets now come with electric engines and are almost as complicated and interesting as regular sets. They use to depend on child power to move them around the track but not anymore. LEGO trains also have the added advantage of providing the opportunity to unbuild and rebuild with entirely new designs every time so that they provide countless hours of entertainment. Another good feature is that they don't use electricity running through the tracks to power the engine, rather they use battery power making them much safer than traditional sets. LEGO trains have become so popular with both children and adults that clubs are now being formed throughout the world dedicated to LEGO trains.

If however, you're ready for the more traditional set ups then your options are almost limitless. You can choose from several different scales, the most popular ones being HO and N. HO has the reputation for being trouble-free and easy to use while N, which is a bigger scale, allows you to build really long trains similar to the freight trains you see in real life. While these are the two most popular there are a variety of scales from very small to garden gauge, which is big enough for you to ride around your yard on.

Model train sets are a great way to spend your leisure time, either alone, with family or with friends at one of the many clubs. It can be educational and fun at the same time.
