Mo' Money, Mo' Problems

The title of this article may lead you to believe that I have quite a lot of money. It may also lead you to believe that I have quite a few problems. The particularly deductive readers may come to the conclusion that I am quite young - with my 'street slang'.

Let me put you straight. Two weeks ago, I had a current account with about four hundred pounds in it, I rented a two bedroom flat in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, I was pretty laid back with no real worries other than perpetually running out of milk. Oh yeah, despite my 'street slang' I am actually in my forties. The title was ironic.

So what's happening in two weeks to give me more money and more problems? Well... I'm still getting used to saying this; I won the pools. Sounds good right? It is. I picked up just over half a million pounds. Even typing this sounds ridiculous, I still haven't told my parents, yet I'm writing an article about it. I suppose it hasn't really sunk in yet.

Obviously I've never had that kind of money in my life - I'm a freelance cartoonist, and have no experience of that sort of money. So I had to find an accountant in Newcastle. That was my first problem. As soon as I sat down with an accountant and told them my story their eyes lit up with the possibility of having me on their books. I found it really difficult to find an accountant in Newcastle that I could trust. The ones in the City seemed so slick, and the overheads for their offices must have been phenomenal, I didn't want to pay for their swanky offices and chairs, I just wanted an honest bloke (or lass) to tell me what to do with all this money!

I went to four different accountants in the city before I sacked it off. I decided to go outside of the city centre and started looking for an accountant in Whitley Bay - at least I'd be able to get a decent fish supper after my meetings! It worked; the first guy I met was perfect - trustworthy, honest and not greedy. And he didn't look down his nose at me. I'll keep you updated about my problems... Don't expect to hear from me for a while though!

Conclusion

Coming into money is great - obviously. But it makes people look at you differently. I found it very difficult to find an accountant that didn't look down their nose at me. But now that I have found the right man, I know that his assistance will be very valuable.
