Microsoft Access is a great platform for developing database software. When looking for good quality Microsoft Access software applications it is better to find something that meets your requirements. Avoid using software that is overblown with features you probably will never need.

How can you determine if you are purchasing good quality software? The first thing to be aware of is if it is possible to make changes to the software yourself? Some companies will lock you into paying a high maintenance agreement for amendments. If you have experience of creating MS Access applications yourself then look to see if the software you are buying is maintainable. Are you supplied with an unlocked file allowing you to change things if and when you choose.

One of the many great features of the MS Office suite of programs is that they all communicate with each other. Good quality Microsoft Access software should allow you to do this. For example, it is handy to be able to email from MS Access by taking advantage of the features in MS Outlook. You can also interface between Excel and Access. PowerPoint and Word both offer similar functionality for communication.

Do you have existing records from a legacy database system? If so you may wish to bring these records into your new software. If you have the ability to make your own changes and the software is not locked then you can use the standard MS Access import features.

Make sure the software comes with a user guide. At the very least a text document written in Notepad would suffice as long as it clearly explains how to use the system. There should also be a point of contact should you need immediate support.

Try before you buy is also worth looking for. You need to know if the software has the features you are looking for and if indeed it will work with our current PC setup. You may find the software is available in Access 2007 when you were expecting to buy a version for Access 2003. Don't rely on converting the software. The conversion depends on how complex the system is. There are certain elements of program code which will not be converted and you may find yourself with a redundant piece of Microsoft Access software. You should be able to download a free limited trial edition to see if it is going to fit your needs.

I believe Microsoft Access software should be written from the user's perspective rather than the programmer. The application should be user friendly, robust and fit your business needs.
