It's no secret that when it comes to meditation a lot of people immediately begin to imagine some monk out in the middle of nowhere meditating silently in the middle of peace.
For a long time I held onto the notion that the only effective way to meditate was by getting into Lotus position, finding a quiet place to sit, undisturbed, and then be still for however long it was you planned on meditating.
Then, after practicing Yoga for quite some time I took a meditation class and discovered that while this may indeed be one way to meditate it isn't the only way and in fact limits you in some ways in regards to your mediation practice.
Perhaps you are wondering in what ways does holding onto the belief that you must sit in a quiet place, undisturbed with limited to no noise limits your practice?
For starters, it limits when you can "meditate" and when you do find a quiet place all it takes is someone or something to enter your "spot" and disturb your practice.
In other words, meditating silently in the middle of peace is a built in excuse to not meditate for most people, including me, at least until I figured out what meditating is really all about.
For me, I figured part of it out when I decided to lead a Yoga Nidra session at an Adult Direct Care Center. Before leading Yoga Nidra at this facility it was safe to say I had become spoiled in regards to my Yoga and Meditation practices. The Yoga studio that I practice at Yoga Pura is quite simply remarkable and the teachers, atmosphere, everything brings about a feeling of Peace, Joy, and Love that allows you to completely surrender into the moment with your practice.
So while, the teachers had expressed and made clear that you could meditate anywhere I never actually meditated anywhere that wasn't peaceful, calm, and serene.
However, at the Adult Direct Care Center it was completely the opposite as it is anything but peaceful, calm, and serene. In fact, while there had been a room open to practice Yoga Nidra in, since only one person wanted to try it, the powers that be felt like it would be better to do the session right out in the open where everyone was.
So, right there in the middle of an extremely chaotic environment with people coming and going, making noise, asking questions, turning lights on and off. I sat down with three people and led them through the practice of Yoga Nidra.
At first, it was hectic yet I stayed calmed and relaxed, leading them through the practice accepting what was and during the middle of the session something truly amazing happened. What had been a completely chaotic and anxiety filled space became one with peace. So peaceful in fact that people would come in with loud energy, walk in to the space of peace that had been created and drop in to that peace as well.
