Measure and Mount Honeycomb Shades

Expert Author James McCosker

This is a guide to mounting 2 inch wood blinds complete with valances. If you do not properly install your blinds, the bracket will be exposed and extend out into the room. This gives the window an unfinished look. To properly install wood shades you need to have the valance wrap around your blinds, all inside the window frame. A straight cut valance will be completely recessed if properly installed.

If not, the hardware will be exposed. If you already installed the shades you might have to hire a decorator or construction company if you cannot handle the job by yourself. A replacement windows company will be happy to help you, but it would cost more than if you follow this guide and do it yourself. Without the valance, your windows will look raw and naked.

You can buy a outside mount valance. Most wood blind brackets are 2 3/4 inch deep, but you need to ascertain the thickness of your valance clips as well. Most are half an inch wide. Add those measurements and you end up with 3 and a quarter inch then you need to subtract the depth of your window opening. This ends up with your return size which you should send to your blind company. For the valance, add an inch to your blind width for the total valance size. Once you know your valance and return measurements, you can order your replacement 2" wood blinds outside mount.

Other wood blind sizes are very similar in mounting. The 2" wood blinds are most popular because the larger slat size looks better and allows for a better view. Hiring a contractor to do window work is much more expensive. Some carpenters will give you a free consultation, but be wary if they do not give that information up front.
