Materials to Care for Ficus Bonsai Trees

Expert Author M. Levenhagen

There are a number of materials one needs to care for, maintain and shape their Ficus Bonsai Trees over time. By utilizing the right tools you can insure your bonsai will remain beautiful and healthy for a long, long time. There are many different things you may need in time, but I'm going to touch on some of the more important things in this article.

The first material, of course, is the tree itself. Make sure you do your research and pick the best bonsai tree for your experience and goals with it. Choose one that suits your tastes and style; different bonsai's suit different people! Understand its needs. Does it do better indoors or outdoors? Does it like a lot of sunlight or not so much? Make sure it's the right tree for what you have available for it in terms of windows and such.

Then of course the pot you keep your tree in is important. If you didn't know, the 'bon' in bonsai means container or pot. Make sure the pot you choose matches the type of plant, and is esthetically pleasing. The pot alone can really do a lot towards shaping the trees personality!

One of the most important tools in your arsenal is going to be your bonsai trimmers and saws. There are a number of these tools on the market specifically designed for shaping your bonsai trees. Often your cuts and trimming is intricate so you don't only want to use a large instrument to handle the job. So make sure you have a number of types and sizes on hand to help you meet your goals with the tree and not harm it.

Wires are also an important tool for the bonsai enthusiast. You'll want to see if you can get your hands on some copper wire; it tends to have the best qualities for what you'll be using it for. You'll use it to form around the tree and help shape the branches. Depending on the thickness of the branches you'll choose the thickness of the wire.

And once the process of shaping the tree and the use of the wire is over, gently cut them off with a wire cutter. Do not just unravel and pull off the wire; you'll risk damaging the tree!

Those are just some of the many materials you'll use to help you create an awesome bonsai tree for your home and collection.
