Often your cuts and trimming is intricate so you don't only want to use a large instrument to handle the job. So make sure you have a number of types and sizes on hand to help you meet your goals with the tree and not harm it.

Wires are also an important tool for the bonsai enthusiast. You'll want to see if you can get your hands on some copper wire; it tends to have the best qualities for what you'll be using it for. You'll use it to form around the tree and help shape the branches. Depending on the thickness of the branches you'll choose the thickness of the wire.

And once the process of shaping the tree and the use of the wire is over, gently cut them off with a wire cutter. Do not just unravel and pull off the wire; you'll risk damaging the tree!
