I was watching a documentary on Martin Luther the other day who back in the 1500s created big problems for the Roman Catholic Church. It seemed like Pope Leo X needed to raise some money and by doing so, did something that he shouldn't have.
He started selling redemption tickets to heaven. These tickets could be purchased for you, your children and even your ancestors. The Catholic Church had made a lot of money selling these, but never thought about the effect that it would have on Europeans after the scam was exposed.
Martin Luther who had studied in Greek and Latin, figured out that no one needed to pay any money to get into heaven and that this was a gift from Jesus. All you needed to do was worship and accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, to enter the kingdom of God.
What Martin Luther exposed back in the 1500 created a lot of problems for the Roman Catholic Church and Christianity would never be the same, ever again. He showed the common person that you didn't need to be controlled, taxed or burdened by the Church to gain access to heaven.
Martin Luther took a big chance by doing what he did, but he did it anyway. His beliefs were stronger than his fear of death. He saw something that was wrong and made it right.
His acts of bravery eventually led to the religious freedom in America as Christians escaped persecution from England. It's hard to imagine the impact that one man can have on the future, but he did and if it wasn't for people like him, we probably would live in a different world today.
