Marathon Running - Some Basic Information For Running a Marathon
Print This Article Ezine Publisher Send To Friends Add To Favorites Post A Comment Suggest Topic Report Author

Running is quickly becoming one of the most preferred methods of exercise. However it really is not as simple as just strapping on a pair of trainers and going for a jog (although you certainly can do that). There are many different levels of running - everything from the aforementioned casual jog up to arguably the most demanding, a marathon.

Marathons got their start in antiquity, when a herald from the city state of Athens ran 26. 3 miles to relay a message that enemy forces were invading Marathon. To commemorate this physical achievement people all over the world adopted running the marathon. Today there are hundreds of formal marathons run all over the world with many of them being quite prestigious sporting events.

The New York City marathon in particular is host to thousands of runners from all over the world, many of them celebrities and world class athletes. Nearly every large city in the world (and many small ones as well) have their own marathons.

These are always large events with audience crowds numbering in the thousands themselves.

Marathons are not for the casual runner. The actual physical requirements made on the body are arduous and potentially life threatening. Every year runners die from these and similar events. It is standard practice at these runs that people be vetted by a medical professional that they are in fact healthy enough to compete.

For those who find the idea of a full marathon a little daunting there are half marathons and 5K runs. While it is still a good idea to be in proper shape these events are less taxing and can be a good starting point to prepare for the full marathon.

Whether you decide to compete, participate or cheer the runners on remember that these events are often more than several hours long and outdoors. Sunscreen and proper clothing are important as is having plenty of water. If you or someone you know begins to feel ill there are always medical tents along the course.
