Once you have completed your keyword discovery process, the next step is to map your target keywords onto various pages of your website. In other words, you have to determine which pages will be optimized for which keywords.
Before you begin, it's important to keep in mind that you should really limit your optimizations to between 1 and 3 key phrases per page. Therefore, you will want to select 1 to 3 of your best search terms for which to optimize your home page.
Once you have determined which search terms will be used on your homepage, now you can decide which terms to use on additional pages. Add your highest priority search terms to pages that are closest to your home page. As you move further and further away from your home page, the priority of your keywords should decrease.
You may also need to build new pages to accommodate all of the keywords that you wish to target. However, keep in mind that you shouldn't be creating new pages just for the sake of optimization. Keywords that you are unable to map in this initial optimization process can be used later in articles and blog posts.
You'll want to map keywords of varying degrees of competition. If you're just getting started and choose only to map your most competitive terms, it is unlikely that you will receive much visitor traffic in the short term. On the other hand, if you only map your least competitive keywords (and likely your lowest searched for term), you will also probably not get much traffic. However, if you have terms with relatively high volume and low competition, make sure to include those terms because they are likely to generate results in a shorter amount of time.
When you have mapped targeted keywords to each page of your website, now you must optimize your pages for these terms. This includes using the keywords within various html tags and throughout the content of the page. It's important to remember that when it comes to on-page optimization, more is not always better. Over using keywords on any particular page may subject you to an over-optimization penalty which could actually impair your search engine visibility.
