A Maltese is a great family pet with a soft silky coat that does not shed very much.
They are very lively with great energy level.
This breed of dog is very sweet, gentle and intelligent. They are very fast learners.
These dogs are to be handled with care as they are bit introverted and need regular socializing with strangers.
Training at home may be a bit difficult, but with a little patience, time and commitment you can easily train your Maltese better than a professional. Home training can improve the relation between Maltese and owner.
Here are some tips that may help you to train your Maltese at home.
- Crate train your Maltese as this is a safe place for your Maltese when you are not around. Crate training also allows your Maltese his/her own space when they want to be alone. Put in some toys your puppy likes to reinforce that the crate is his/her own private space.
- Groom your Maltese regularly. Brushing, bathing, ear cleaning, cleaning around the eyes and nail trimming are very essential for this breed. Try to reward your puppy after brushing, so that your puppy accepts brushing gladly. Always groom your puppy in very short sessions.
- Always have a positive attitude toward your Maltese.
- Start with basic training like sit, come, and stay.
A Maltese is just like any other dog and responds to boundaries.
Being a social animal, your Maltese needs to understand that you are the leader. Establishing leadership is not done with harsh or rough methods. The best way to establish leadership is by controlling the activities that are important to your Maltese.
