Because there are so many things to say I will structure this article in two parts.
Part 1:
Before you assume the role of coach by grabbing the whistle and the clipboard, the first thing you should do, would be to sit down and have a chat with your kid to see how he would feel having you as his or her basketball coach because if you don't ask you will never know whats going on in their heads. Most kids are thrilled of having one of their parents running the basketball team in which he plays, because he can spend a lot more time with his mom or dad (the coach) and they feel proud, having their parent coaching the team because he might know that you are the right person for the job.
A little hint on how you can see that is by looking into their eyes and seeing the little sparkles after a good practice match or after winning a game or even the championship however on the flip side there are kids who do not feel comfortable having one of their parents coaching the basketball team and they might feel intimidated or they might have other reasons for feeling this way. No matter what your decision might be, you must take your child's wishes into account before you take your final decision.
If your kid gives you the green light to start coaching the basketball team in which he plays there are some basic tips that you must take into consideration so you do not mix your jobs as a coach and as a parent at the same time.
