Make Chicken Coops - Things to Consider
Print This Article Ezine Publisher Send To Friends Add To Favorites Post A Comment Suggest Topic Report Author

Before starting out to make chicken coops it is very important to give consideration to the welfare and needs of the chicken itself. Now chickens are not as discerning as your average pet but they do still need looking after. You do not want a "clucky hen" in your coop!

The Needs Of Your Chickens

Chickens need to be able to escape from the cold, dampness, heat, and of course predators. Their living quarters need to be clean and easily accessible for cleaning purposes and the gathering of eggs. A happy chicken is a productive chicken.

There are various points to consider when starting construction i.e., large water feeders, automatic food dispensers, a perch with a facility on the floor to aid with the cleaning of their droppings.

Electricity in the coop will provide light which should encourage the hens to lay all the year round. Some form of insulation to help retain the heat within the coop itself should be applied. The door to the coop should be large enough to allow easy access for cleaning purposes, and to collect eggs.

Where To Site Your Chicken Coop

To make chicken coops, due consideration should also be given to the placement of the coop so that food and hay storage can be nearby. Hay placed in the nest boxes reduces the risk of the eggs breaking or cracking, and all your cleaning equipment can be housed in the same area making it quicker and easier to do the daily jobs.

Sufficient light is essential in order to boost the production of eggs and so ensure the windows of your coop are facing the sun for the best part of the day.

Keeping Your Chickens Safe From Predators

Predators are a big concern and so a great deal of thought must go into making your coop as safe and possible. Fencing all around and on top of the coop is essential and to make it secure against burrowing animals.

Make chicken coops in a sheltered spot if you live in a windy area, and an elevated coop is advisable if your garden is liable to flooding. Plan carefully, build properly and you'll reap the dividends.

Building chicken coops is fairly straightforward if you follow these tips. For a Free beginners guide to raising chickens at home, just visit my building chicken coops website. You can download the guide directly from the page. No sign up needed - its a free guide.
