"Low-carbohydrate diet promoters, who make a lot of money playing on the ignorance of Americans, know as much about nutrition as an Arkansas hog knows about astronomy." (Carbs Are the Culprit in Popular Diet Books; Family Medical Practice, October 1,2003, p. 22.)
Most popular diet authors, including real doctors and other paramedical personnel who pretend to be doctors, know as much about nutrition as your local mechanic. Their ideas about losing weight on a low-carbohydrate diet are completely erroneous, but since most people know little or nothing about nutrition, they fall prey to all sorts of diet scams. People pay good money for pills that are supposed to bum fat trom your abdomen. They buy diet shakes that contain as much fat and calories as bacon, eggs, and home flies with toast, juice, and coffee. People also believe that grapefruit juice or cabbage soup bums fat. And now people are buying low-carb beers, ice cream, and sandwiches, which are about as healthy for you as eating a hot fudge sundae, which actually has better nutrition than these low-carb foods, and actually tastes much better.
Your diet should not be restricted in any one-food source if you want to lose weight safely. A healthy diet should consist of approximately 60% complex carbohydrates, 25% protein, and 15% fat. Remember that each gram of protein and carbohydrates contains 4 calories, whereas each gram of fat contains 9 calories. You do the math!
By increasing the protein content and decreasing the fat content of your meals, you can slowly and safely lose weight that will stay permanently lost. Unlike with low-carb, high-profit diet scams, you won't experience rapid rebound weight gain that invariably occurs when you stop the diet, and you'll avoid the nasty side effects and hidden health problems inherent in these unsafe low-carb diets.
