Low Blood Sugar - Symptoms and Causes of Hypoglycemia

Expert Author Tehmina Mazher

Have you ever faced the situation when you are feeling completely exhausted but the doctors are unable to locate the cause? Only a vigilant doctor may be able to diagnose that you are facing the problem of hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is a medical term used for low blood sugar. It is important to locate the cause of low blood sugar as this is the result of some abnormality in the body.

Most of us know that 98% of our body's energy comes from sugar present in the blood. The amount of sugar present in the blood is sufficient for only 3 minutes; so the liver has to constantly release sugar from the cells in the blood. Liver is able to store the sugar even for 12 hours. The body has to manufacture sugar from different energy sources including proteins.

When the level of blood glucose drops down the person feels shaky, hungry, anxious and sweaty. Severe symptoms of low blood sugar include warm sensation, loss of memory, fatigue and even passing out feelings. The repeated attacks of hypoglycemia makes the body used to of it; so the body is least affected and the intensity of symptoms start to decrease.

There are two kinds of low blood sugar.

  1. When the blood glucose in the body rises too high it causes the pancreas to produce excessive insulin. This excessive insulin causes a steep fall in the blood sugar level.
  2. Sometimes this phase is caused by the gradual drop in the level of sugar in blood. This is caused by the liver when it runs out of the sugar store.

Previously it was believed that generally hypoglycemia caused by insulin is mostly followed by the meal. However now they know that this stage can occur at any time.

It is impossible to diagnose the attack of hypoglycemia by blood glucose monitoring after suffering from weakness, dizziness or fainting. The body starts to produce adrenalin soon after the attack and the blood glucose level returns to normal.

The better way of diagnosing hypoglycemia is by feeding the body with plenty of sugar and then checking the levels several times after equal intervals of half hours. It is very important to locate the cause of low blood sugar once it is diagnosed. If it is left untreated it can damage liver. Some other serious damages caused by low blood sugar include glandular abnormalities, tumors and abnormality of hormones.
