Looking at Display Homes Before You Build

Expert Author Paul C Clarke

One of the most pleasurable parts of building your own home is all the planning and thought that goes into it before even a single foundation is laid. Display homes are one of the more fun parts of the research process as it not only gives you an idea of what your dream house may look like, but it also gives you a clear idea of the standard of workmanship and finishing the builder you are thinking of using will produce.

For many of us, it's hard to visualize exactly what your new home may look like by just looking at building plans. How big is that walk-in wardrobe anyway? Will it be annoying to have the bathroom there? Do we really need a spare bedroom? All of these types of questions are easy to answer once you visit and look through a showroom that has been prepared for that purpose. You might like it so much you want one exactly the same, though many people like to investigate how much it may cost to make anything from minimal, to extensive changes to the original plan.

Remember when you are walking around and inside the display homes that while they are fitted out to show you how your future new house may look, often painted in the most fashionable of colors, this isn't as important as the level of workmanship. Does the home feel strong and solid? Or do the walls feel a little flimsy? Are the features ones you really cannot live without, or is there some room to consider other options?

Double check that the house plans for the display home you are looking at are the same as the home you are walking through. Because these buildings are the showcase of the builder, they sometimes add extra size or upgrade on some of the fittings and these may not be included in the original plans. Make sure the plans you select mirror exactly what you liked about the houses you saw.

Think about whether the layout fits the needs and habits of your family. Can you see your children playing by the fire? Or settling down happily to sleep in those bedrooms? Is there a place for you to work in peace, or is there good soundproofing for your eldest' drum practice? Walking through a display home can help you work out if the plans you like meet the end result, leaving you ready to just enjoy a quite night in, in your own home, without interruption.
