While aging is inevitable, it doesn't need to be a miserable dragged-out process. It can indeed be less scary if we arm ourselves with the knowledge of how our body works in the later years. It's never too early to start taking care of your body, you'll be glad you did.
Various changes, both negative and positive, are experienced as part of the aging process. The bones become thinner and more brittle and could lead to osteoporosis. The heart becomes slightly enlarged, the heart rate lowers and the walls of the heart thicken. The brain composition changes and there is slight forgetfulness as we grow older. In the worst case scenario some people end up getting dementia or Alzheimer's.
Problems with the digestive system include constipation and stomach pains. This is because the digestive tract becomes more rigid and doesn't contract as often. The sense of vision and hearing gradually decline as does the senses of touch and smell. Tough enamel protecting the teeth from decay wears away, skin loses elasticity and the sex life seems to go downhill especially after menopause in women. This is mainly due to lack of lubrication in women and erectile dysfunction in men.
This could sound like an uncomfortable downward spiral but it doesn't need to be. There is remedy for lack of lubrication and also for the ED in men. It is advisable to practice healthy habits early on but even as you get older you can still reap the benefits of taking good care of yourself.
1. Regular exercise keeps you physically active.
2. Socializing with friends and family keeps you mentally active.
3. Eat healthy food rich in fiber, low in fat and cholesterol and stay away from junk food.
4. Visit your doctor, dentist and optometrist regularly for checkups.
5. When on medication ensure that you take in entirety.
6. Limit alcohol consumption and smoking, better yet cut them out completely.
7. Finally....sleep. Yes get all the sleep your body needs to help it rejuvenate, ready for another day.
Emotional health is as vital as the physical health so pay attention to that too by surrounding yourself with the things you love and are passionate about. Enjoy each new day and age with grace!
