Living Longer and Healthier

Expert Author Daniel M Ramirez

Living longer and healthier has been an ambition for many of us; however this is a dream that is becoming more achievable nowadays as we understand how a healthy diet and an exercise program are linked to a healthy living. Simple and small changes to your lifestyle will have a big impact in how long and well you will live and what it was considered unachievable in the past, it is now attainable by adapting a "healthy regime" to your life. There are a few things to consider:

1. Make new friends or reconnect with your old ones: sharing some time with good friends will reduce your stress levels and improve your immune system. It is now clear that stress has a negative impact in your health and well-being and the best remedy to combat it is by having a good laugh with the people you love.

2. Good dental hygiene: brushing your teeth should be part of your daily routine; however, many people normally ignore the importance of flossing - this could save your live by cutting the risk of heart disease and reducing the damage caused by bacteria in your gums. A gently brush to the tongue is also ideal, as well as changing your toothbrush every two months or more often if needed.

3. Healthy diet: a diet packed with fruit, vegetables, good fats, nuts, seeds, herbs and white meat is probably the single and most important lifestyle change you can make to increase the changes of living a healthier life. The antioxidants found in fruit and vegetables normally fight free radicals that attack our cells and makes us age faster. It is important to understand that by "healthy diet" we mean a balanced diet, not cutting the size of your meals.

4. Good training regime: you should aim for at least 3 sessions a week of moderate exercise and 3 sessions of light training, which could be a gentle walk. Regular exercise will reduce your cholesterol, making you lose weight, reduce the chances of heart attacks and increase your immune system, which eventually will protect your body against many diseases. Many people find excuses to avoid any form of exercise; if this is your case, then look for an activity that you enjoy doing; it doesn't necessarily mean a gym; there are many things you can do instead, such as swimming, outdoor training, walking a dog, jogging and others.

5. Sleep better: a good night sleep is fundamental for a good health; one of the reasons is that our body normally repairs the muscle tissue damaged caused by stress, working or even exercising; this is probably the biggest remedy to combat stress. There are many reasons why you should aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night; this will not only make you look better but will make you feel significantly better straight away and perform better in your daily routine.
