Lionel Trains - What Makes Them So Popular?

Lionel trains are popular for many reasons. After all who does not love trains? Trains made America great by expanding west bringing people, supplies and equipment to build our great country. From the days of the early steam engines hauling freight across the great divides to the powerful diesel electric locomotives of today.

Trains played a large role in the history of America, from the industrial revolution in the North-east to the colonization of the West. The first American railroads, were either man or horse-powered and some were gravity trains around the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Steam locomotives began making their appearance around the early 1820s and 1830s. The first on record to use steam regularly was the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company. One of the first railroad services to carry passengers was the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) around 1830.

America has a rich and very diverse history thanks in part to railroads. They provided a very safe and cost effective way to transport goods and people in all kinds of weather.

Joshua Lionel Cowen and Harry C. Grant founded the Lionel Corporation on September 5 in New York City. The official paperwork was filed 2 weeks later on September 22nd. Today with the advancement in technologies with the supersonic and bullet trains father and son still prefer the antique designs. The detail in the craftsmanship just adds to the mystique of the hobby. One thing the Cowen always made sure of was that the replicas very true to the original designs.

Still very popular today especially around the holidays when father and son complete their model railroad with all its accessories and cool landscapes warms the hearts of whole family. It is always a sight to behold watching the completed Lionel trains puffing down the tracks to the cheers and smiles of the family.

With a seen like that it is not hard to understand just why Lionel Trains are so popular. Many families pull out the movies The Polar Express and American Trains Choo Choo Christmas that make for a very special occasion.
