Leptin "signals" the body to store fat or burn fat. The amount of Leptin in your blood is directly proportional to your body fat. So as you gain weight your Leptin level increases "signaling" your brain to reduce appetite, reduce fat storage and increase fat burning.
So why is it that overweight people still have strong appetites? The answer is unknown but many researchers believe that the increased Leptin in overweight people doesn't work very well, something they call "Leptin Resistance". It seems Leptin works better at increasing your appetite than in decreasing it.
So what is the key? The key is to maintain optimal levels of Leptin at all times, not too much and certainly not too little. Too little Leptin triggers your appetite and can lead to overeating. This is why calorie restricted diets do not work. When you decrease calories you decrease fat which in turn decreases Leptin which INCREASES appetite. This is why most diets do not work.
Is there a better way? There is a better way according to Dr. Neal Barnard, noted nutritional expert and researcher, in his book "Breaking the Food Seduction". A better way is to optimize or boost your "Leptin" level. This can be done in three steps.
1. Rule of 10 - simply take your ideal body weight and multiply by 10. This will give you the minimum amount of calories you need to eat each day.
2. Eat low fat foods- low fat foods will reduce overall fat which helps your Leptin work better.
3. Exercise- minimal exercise like walking or jogging 15-30 minutes per day will help your Leptin work better.
These three steps are easy to do and will improve your body's response to Leptin.
There is another suggestion that I will mention here and that is a product called REJUVENEX which helps normalize your body's Leptin level.
