Berwick-upon-Tweed may also be referred to as Berwick for ease of saying. It's located in Northumberland County in England. Situated by the River Tweed and very close to the Scottish border, only two and a half miles.
Coming into being when the kingdom of Northumbria was around, and also a part of Heptarchy system. Also the location of many historical battles that took place between Scotland and England. Changing hands many times during the past.
Where Berwick station now stands there once was a medieval castle, this was the location where many battles would be fought. During these border wars this location would actually change hands over thirteen total times.
With so many battles taking place here you can simply imagine the amount of history and culture that can be found in the area. Not only part of English history, but tons of history on Scotland. Actually in all that history the town would never be formally annexed to be included in England.
However many laws and years later it was included as part of Northumberland County finally in 1885. Most of the people who live in the city now are working in the shops and hotels that are located here. While there is a bit of manufacturing and other industries in the town too.
Many locations are available here to shop, including High Street locations as well as little locations. Sites that should be seen while in Berwick include the Old Bridge, Berwick Barracks, and what is left of the wall that you can find now in town center.
There are a number of other locations and bridges that are fantastic to see while in Berwick. The dialect in this area is very interesting with a mix of Scot and English that is all its own. Check out Berwick when you have a chance.
