Located in Greater Manchester you will find the location of Stockport. Located above the River Mersey, and close by the joining of the Rivers Tame and Goyt. Only a short six miles from Manchester, and the largest settlement of what is the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport.

The town was known during the sixteenth century for the growing of hemp and the making of ropes. During the eighteenth century they would begin to make silk, being the first location in the UK to use machines to do so.

While the nineteenth century would see cotton industries become the mainstay of the economy. It would also be the location of hatting for the country by the year of 1884 they would export out over six millions hats each year.

But that would end when in 1997 the hat works would close down. Though you can still find information about this industry located in the Museum of Hatting.

It is thought that people were in this area as early as the Mesolithic time period. There have been findings of weapons and tools that date back to the Neolithic time period found in the area. Some of the findings include flint knives, funery urns, and stone hammers, and much more that you can see in the local museum.

Though not much evidence is shown of the Romans ever settling in this place. You can also still find some air raid tunnels from WWII located in the center of town. Plus you can find the medieval house of a merchant located in Market Place.

Also located in Stockport are the Town hall, and Vernon Park. Plus many other historical sites located in town that are wonderful to see. Make sure you do check out the museum to see all those findings from pre-historic time. Not only that but all the other wonderful things that are offered here.
