It isn't your income that is getting in the way of you having everything you want in life, it is your attitude. I know that it sounds harsh, but it is true. But attitudes can really be changed. It takes a little time and getting used to, but you can change the way you think about money, spending, saving and your finances.
I hear a lot of people say that they are tired of being in debt and want to do something about it. But few of them actually do. Because they like buying what they want when they want it. After all, they deserve it. But this is what has gotten them into debt in the first place. They aren't happy with what they already have.
I understand. It really seems to be part of human nature to want. Just to want more and want better and want something new. Advertisements, magazines and television shows appeal to that desire.
But if you want to gain control over your finances, you have to start with controlling your spending. It isn't easy at first. You think of all the things you want. Every trip to the store just leaves you wanting something. And if you are going from getting anything you want to having to hold back, you are probably really struggling.
One of the main keys to controlling the wanting is to avoid situations that trigger wants. Don't watch as much television or read as many magazines. Don't compare what you have with what others have. Many advisors will tell you to just not go in a shopping store. Well, that really works. Find something else to do with your time. Just don't go shopping unless you really need something. If all you need is a loaf of bread and gallon of milk from the store, walk in with only ten dollars in your pocket. Don't take the debit card, credit card or check book. Just the cash.
It also helps to look around your home and take inventory of what you do have. If you feel like shopping for new clothes, simply start reorganizing your closet. The urge usually disappears when you see how much you really have. This works for many wants in life. Look for what you already have instead of what you don't. There are so many things to do without spending any money at all.
I know that it is hard to start learning how to not spend as much money. But the more you practice some frugality, the easier it gets. You begin to look at what you do have instead of what you don't. You can start simply by not buying any more of something until you use every bit that you already have. Don't buy a new project to start until you complete the ones you are working on. Don't stock up on things that you don't use. Take the time to think about what you are spending.
