Want to learn to hypnotize? Let me help you out.
Before I begin, there's a couple of things I should clarify:
- There are two types of hypnosis: covert (i.e. the subject is unaware they will be hypnotized), and obvious (i.e. your subject agrees to be hypnotized).
- Not everybody is susceptible to hypnosis, but these steps WILL help put somebody into a hypnotic state (or "trance"). It is important to note, however, that your subject must trust you and your intentions if you ever hope to bring them
- Create the atmosphere: it will be much easier bringing your subject into a hypnotic state if they are relaxed, so it is a good idea to facilitate a relaxing environment for them. Try dimming the lights, removing distracting noises (a loudly ticking clock can be VERY off-putting), some soothing music, even a few lit candles to help set the atmosphere. No need to go overboard, remember you want to hypnotize NOT seduce your subject :).
- Relax: Now begin relaxation phase, or "induction". Your subject will follow your lead here, so it is very important that YOU are relaxed as well (ever had a stressed out person tell you "calm down": you did the exact opposite didn't you?). Speak in a soothing, soft, peaceful voice, and instruct your subject to begin to relax completely. Bring your subjects attention to their breathing, and tell them to inhale slowly, deeply, fully, and to relax their entire body as they exhale.
- Remove the obstacles: It's very possible that your subject may have brought a bunch of mental baggage into the session which will prevent them from going into trance. Get them to let go of any distracting thoughts or hang-ups they may have, and let go of any tension in their body. Instruct them to just "let it go", and to imagine any tension, stress, or anxiety leaving their body.
- Fill them with comfort: With the baggage and negativity obstacles now removed, instruct your subject to imagine a warm, soothing light filling their entire body. Get them to begin at their toes, and move slowly upwards throughout the entire body to the head, moving gradually through each body part at a time. Have the subject imagine the light swirling, relaxing, and warming every inch of their body helping them feel protected, safe, and at ease.
- Hypnosis time: By now your subject should be completely relaxed, at ease, and open to hypnotic suggestion. Get them to visualize whatever the suggestion may be. For example, in getting a subject to want to quit smoking, have them imagine how disgusting they feel every time they even look at a cigarette (this enforces cigarettes as "bad"), and how alive and energized they feel when they aren't smoking, how each breath is uplifting, exciting, and enlivening now that the are a non-smoker (setting this new habit up as "good"). By getting the subject to visualize the scenario, they can feel the emotions. This is very beneficial to the hypnosis process. Let your subject "float" in this blissful state for a few minutes before you slowly bring them out of trance.
There you go: five easy steps for anybody who wants to learn to hypnotize. More to come on covert hypnosis soon.
