Learn More About Dyslexia

Many children across the world struggle with reading when they're just learning how to read. However, with plenty of practice and maybe some extra help from their parents, in a few months they catch up and it's like it never happened. Parents don't panic when their kids stutter as they learn how to read, after all, everything's harder at first, right?

Well, dyslexia is a whole different thing. It's not just a rocky start, it's a real condition affecting thousands of children. And there's a big difference between a child with reading problems and one with dyslexia. So if you're not sure whether your child just has a rocky start or is dyslexic, here's some flags for dyslexia: a dyslexic child has great difficulty with reading and writing, although he's very bright. He learns fast everything you tell him, but when it comes to reading and writing, all your extra help and patience don't seem to lead anywhere. Why?

The answer is simple. Some extra help will not make everything right, because a child with dyslexia needs a whole different kind of help. Endless reading and writing sessions will just be tiresome, and the positive results you're expecting don't seem to show. People suffering from dyslexia usually learn to read and write at about age 10, but they'll struggle with it for their whole lives. They'll have to read and reread texts several times before they can comprehend what they've read. The same goes for writing. They'll need several drafts before finally being able to write properly.

First of all, do NOT think of dyslexia as stupidity, retardation, brain damage, laziness or anything else like that. Dyslexia has nothing to do with any of those. On the contrary, people suffering from dyslexia are often smarter than the average, but they don't see things like most people do. For instance, as compared to the average individual, use a different part of the brain when they read, and they use more of it. They can suffer from phonological dyslexia or visual dyslexia. Both consist a different perception, either regarding speech, or written word. It is a condition that tends to run in families.

It is very important to understand that dyslexia has nothing to do with stupidity or retardation. And there's nothing to prevent them from achieving their goals in life. In fact, plenty of people with dyslexia develop ingenious strategies and routines that help them achieve high standards. So if your child is dyslexic it doesn't mean that it will affect his way in life. It will make it more difficult, but not impossible. And I bet you didn't know that Tom Cruise, Orlando Bloom and Steve Jobs (Apple CEO) are dyslexic. They turned out pretty great, didn't they?
