Learn How to Communicate With the 4 Main Personality Types

Expert Author Alba Figueroa

About twenty four hundred years ago Hippocrates discovered the four personality types or temperaments.

Each one of these personality types has its own strengths and weaknesses. We all have a combination of all four temperaments, but normally one personality type is more dominant than all the rest.

Here are the four personality types:

First is The Melancholy. This personality type struggles the most with a low self-esteem as they tend to set high standards for themselves as well as for other people.

In order to persuade a melancholy person you must provide a great amount of detail. They need to see all of the points on the PowerPoint presentation and have every single point explained to them in great detail. You will want to provide supplemental material such as transcripts, workbooks, audios and video to help them see the bigger picture.

Next is The Choleric. This is the most influential and active of the four personality types. The choleric person is strong-willed, independent, and opinionated. They thrive on activity so be sure to keep them engaged.

You must first gain their trust and respect in order to influence the choleric person. They like to be surrounded by successful and secure professionals. So always be sure to be well prepared and do your research. Also be ready to receive feedback, even if you don't ask for it.

Now let's talk about The Phlegmatic. They are better characterized as "easy going" people. They are composed and calm individuals who are not easily distracted. The phlegmatic person has the type of temperament that is easy to get along with. This type of person is not bothered by much and lives a serene and tranquil life. You must show the phlegmatic person that their opinion matters. Show them that how things should be done for the best interest of the entire group. They don't like it when others feel felt out. Be sure to conduct polls, surveys, and Q&A sessions where they can express their concerns and share their opinions.

And lastly, is The Sanguine. This personality is naturally approachable, sociable and responsive. Often times, a sanguine person is usually called a 'super-extrovert'. This temperament is frequently considered a "natural sales person". They also tend to enter professions that are outgoing like performing on stage or acting.

A sanguine personality needs to know how much fun they will have at an event before they even decide if they want to attend. Be sure to always notify them of all the extra perks and bonuses and about any opportunity they will have to be noticed.

Now knowing all this, go back and look at all of your marketing materials and see how you have communicated to all of these personalities in the past. You probably missed a few details here and there. It's a good idea to revise the way you communicate from now on to ensure that you get the best results in your business by effecting addressing every personality's needs. Be sure to answer the question that's on their minds "what's in it for me?" and include something that directly speaks to every temperament.
