The date August 8, 2008 for this year's Summer Olympics was picked for a reason - this is an extremely lucky day for the Chinese. If you are going to attend the XXIX Olympiad and heading to China for it, know what actions are appropriate in China, and study Chinese.

Understand the Rules

Olympic visitors in China are provided with a list of dos and don'ts. Bear in mind that both the Chinese and Westerners alike should comply with China's very strict laws, even if brotherhood and freedom is promoted by the Olympics. To prevent trouble, you need to abide by these rules.

And because the list is in Chinese, your enthusiasm to study Chinese fast can help you considerably. With basic Chinese, you can make yourself understood if you're asked questions, in need of help, or lost.

The Chinese government have declared certain areas like military bases off-limits to foreigners. STDs, mental handicaps, and anti-China opinions are also banned. You'll have a good chance of getting a Chinese visa if you learn Chinese.

Be Aware of the Culture

Chinese culture has been in existence for many millenia. You can deal with the Chinese people if you learn portions of this culture.

Building personal relationships will help you in your business dealings, even if you're only shopping. Engage in small talk while haggling and you'll be sweetening the sugar, possibly closing the deal on your own terms. This is a very good reason to learn Chinese.

Seniority is very essential to the Chinese. Instead of addressing a person by Mister or Miss, referring to them by their designation (Director/Chairman) is excellent practice. Also, hand out and take business cards with both hands outstretched; be sure that the name on your business card faces the recipient so that he can see it right away.

Give proper respect according to importance in terms of rank and seniority. "Face" is very important, so never embarrass a Chinese in the presence of others. Leave your rudeness and brashness at home. Also, never say no to a gift, and offer small gifts in gratitude.

Never put down their revered leaders, and don't go around with a frown. Also, do not voice pro-Tibet or Taiwan views, and do not compliment the Japanese.

To paraphrase a famous quote, "when in China, do as the Chinese do." This means that you really should learn Chinese online in order to converse fluently.
