It is a fact that we all want something better. We want a better a car; we want a better home; we want to move into a better neighborhood; we want a better job that pays better. It is human nature to want a better life. But wait a second, let us backtrack a bit and ask ourselves this question,"How do we find a better job with better pay if we have not had enough experience nor have we advanced ourselves in our respective professions?"

Many of us in the corporate world aspire to be promoted; we want that higher floor corner office with a fantastic view. In fact, there are those who dream of eventually becoming leaders and managers of the company. Many however are not fortunate to live that dream; only few succeed, and the reason they do is because they have learned how to advance themselves in their respective professions in order to be fit for a position of leadership.

If your career goal is to one day become a chief executive, managing director, or even president of a company; here are 4 basic tips to help you achieve your goal.

Set Goals

"How do you know if you are getting closer to a destination if you do not know where that destination is?"

You need objectives and goals to help guide you to where we want to be in the future. Without a specific direction, and a plan to help you along the way, you will drift aimlessly in the currents of a direction-less career.

For most people setting a goal is easy; but it is the setting of a great goal that takes practice and a well set goal accounts for a well implemented strategy and plan to reach that goal. When setting a goal, keep in mind the SMART principle of goal setting. Your goal must be:

S for Specific, so you are able to focus on what you want to achieve.

M for measurable, so you are able to properly gauge or evaluate the outcome of your actions, and find out if you have reached your goal or fell short.

A for attainable, so you know it is something that someone might have already accomplished; and if someone has done it, so can you. Do the resources you have at hand, allow you to achieve your goal?

R for realistic, so you are grounded enough to know that you are planning to do something that can actually be done, being realistic is simply establishing that you don't have a wild idea like "jumping up into the sky and grabbing the moon or something like that".

T for time-bound, so you set a specific timetable for you to accomplish this goal, otherwise when the appropriated time has elapsed, that would signal for you to go to the next goal. This way, you do not waste precious time, effort and resources on something that probably just won't work.

Visualize The Future

How can you achieve something that you cannot even see yourself achieving in your head?

Some people, without their knowing, are good at visualizing... or daydreaming, and that depends how you use it. This can be turned into a very powerful ally for accomplishment; instead of just visualizing images at random, focus on an image of a future for you that is a step up from where you are today. Make this a regular habit of visualizing and focusing on what it is you want.

If you are able to see this future in your head, if you can clearly picture yourself where you want to be 3 or 5 year down the line, then you are also able to work towards that image and accomplish it.

Keep Pushing Your Limits

How do you know what more you are capable of doing if you do not go to the next bigger challenge?

Some employees quit their jobs because of boredom. They no longer find their job challenging and so it no longer presents any more learning experiences for them. This is even more evident with companies that do not provide employees with opportunities for them to improve their skills or abilities.

There are also employees who have become so comfortable with what they are doing and are quite happy with what they are earning. They are usually the ones who are not selected to become leaders. You need to keep pushing your limits, you need to develop and grow by being ready for change, taking on new challenges and greater responsibilities.

You can develop your skills and personality through seminars and workshops. You can also join civic organizations or leadership training organizations that provide members with opportunities for personality development, time management, leadership and other courses and lessons that will help you improve the way you do your job.

Be Proactive

"How do you get noticed when what you do is not worth noticing?"

A leader must not be content with performing what is expected of him. If you want to advance in your profession, you have to be proactive and exceed expectations.

No one will notice your work if your work is mediocre, and no one will notice you if you do not do anything worth noticing. Put in more than just a hundred percent, go the extra mile, take pride in doing your job well and excelling in what you do. This shall lead to more opportunities of leadership, more tasks to accomplish and obstacles to hurdle. All these are the lessons you need to learn in order to advance yourself and prepare you for positions of leadership.
