Landscapes Photography - Before You Make Any Trip

I don't think there is any other photography theme that rewards effort as much as landscape does. To take really good landscape pictures you need to be up before the rooster and home after the nightingale goes to sleep. Sometimes you need to walk all day and it is often too hot or too cold. In the light of this, I reckon that your comfort is as important as your photographic eye and technique.

You can't - or at least I can't - take good picture if you are cold, hot, or tired. I can't walk if my feet are sore or if I am fed up with having a sunburnt neck. Although you can't control the weather, there are some basic steps you can take to ensure your comfort level is as high as possible. Once all your personal needs have been cared for, you will be free to shoot masterpieces. The following list contains some of the points that I think are essential for any landscape photography trip:

  • Wear a shirt that has a collar.
  • Always take a hat: these are essential in both hot and cold climates.
  • Wear good waterproof hiking boots with thick socks.
  • Take energy bars to eat.
  • Carry a full water bottle.
  • If it's sunny don't' forget your sunblock.
  • Take a torch in case you get lost and you need to find your way in the dark.
  • A space blanket is useful if you need to keep warm, and it folds down to a very small size.
  • Take a mobile phone in case of emergency, battery full charge.
  • If you are driving remember to landmark your car: park it near a huge tree or rock, for example - it's easier to get lost than you might think.
  • A compass will help too (but don't leave it in the car!)
