A simple definition as to what a landing page is - is that it is the first page a visitor hits on your website. This isn't necessarily the home page as many people mistakenly believe. The way you get people to land on a particular page, is by optimizing it for specific keywords or phrases. The way a webpage is optimized can of course have a significant impact on your site and whether or not it is one that becomes successful.
If the website is one that is poorly designed or is not optimized properly for your sites content, then it will likely not be very successful and the only way you'll get people to it is by buying advertising. While you would expect to have to buy some advertising, you don't want to have to do so throughout the life of the website when you don't have to.
It is important that your website be optimized for the search engines individually according to the content within the page. For instance, many people will build a website, and use "generic" keyword, description and title tags. That is to say they will simply use the same exact tags on every single page without further thought and they are doing themselves a grave injustice because they are not going to get very good positioning on their website.
Another mistake that is commonly made is including keywords in the meta tags but not including them in the content within your website. You've obviously chosen these keywords for a reason but it does you little good if these phrases are not included with the website's content. The idea is to work smarter, not harder and if you follow proper techniques, your job will become much easier and you'll see much better results.
Now, when you hear people talking about landing pages, they are talking of pages that have been search engine optimized for a particular keyword in order to get good placement in search engines for that term. Good placement in turn draws traffic to your website as a whole so therefore a well designed page that is properly search engine optimized will draw people not only to that page, but it gives them the opportunity to see your entire website.
