In the world of flat screen television, currently two technologies are in competition. One is plasma television and the other is known as LCD television. Both of the technologies provide an excellent picture quality and a brilliant sound quality and a lot of research has to be done before deciding that which technology is better.
Ironically speaking, both of these technologies are closely related to each other and have a lot of similarities yet there are some differences too. First main difference between the two technologies is the way through which the picture is created on the screen. In a plasma television pixels are created on the screen with the help of cells in which gas is filled and these cells are coated with a phosphorescent material.
When electric current passes through these cells, phosphorescent material and gas glows, which creates picture on the screen. Pixels in LCD TV are created with the help of a fluorescent light which glows the cells made of liquid crystals. Strength of electrical signals determines dullness or brightness of the crystals.
The major hurdle in the way of success of plasma TV has been its burn in defect. Although the manufacturers have minimized this effect but there is still room for improvement. In case of LCD TV, the major drawback has been the clear vision only from the front. If a person tries to see it from a different angle, the vision fades and is not clear which makes this technology less useful.
Nowadays, television manufacturing companies are presenting plasma television sets as main stream item because of the fact that LCD is no more economical in screen sizes above 40". A person rarely sees an LCD bigger than this size. This is another drawback of LCD television sets.
If some other factors are considered, it is still hard to decide that which technology is better. Plasma television has better picture quality and gives better visual results. This makes this technology very suitable to be used in cinemas and in theatres because it provides with good resolution power and bright colors.
Moreover, picture on a plasma television screen can be viewed clearly from several angles. So, a great number of people sitting at several angles with the television can watch it without any difficulty which is a huge difficulty in case of LCD. LCD can be used for domestic purposes because of less consumption of electricity.
