Koi Pond Supplies With a Special Purpose

If the person in charge of a pool that contains koi fish plans to transfer those fish to a different location, then that pool supervisor needs a special type of koi pool supplies. Those supplies should include large insulated containers, containers that have been fitted with portable air pumps.

During the week of June 20, 2010, about 250 of the koi in the pool at Anaheim's Disneyland Hotel were transported to a new habitat, actually three different habitats. Roughly one third of the school was taken to the Huntington Library. Roughly one third received a ride to the Art Collections in San Marino. And approximately the same number of fish began swimming around in a pond at the Botanical Gardens, another familiar, San Marino spot.

About two weeks before that transfer took place, representatives from Disney contacted Shadi Shihab, the floristic gardens curator. She oversees care of the ponds at Huntington Gardens. She has told the Los Angeles Times that the Disney representatives "were serious" about finding a suitable home for their fish. Those animals needed a temporary home, because the Hotel was scheduled to undergo a makeover.

The actual transfer took place during two successive weekends. Disney paid for the necessary supplies--the insulated containers and the portable air pumps. The Disney Company had paid for all the supplies used at the Anaheim hotel. The pond supplies had included an aerator, a vacuum and beneficial bacteria.

The aerator had insured the presence of oxygen from top to bottom of the water. The vacuum had freed the water of leaves and other debris. The beneficial bacteria managed to eat up unwanted microbes, those that might otherwise harm any living creatures in the pond waters.

Recently, some of those bacteria, along with the fish, were transferred into suitable containers. Following that transfer, air pumps were used to pump pond water into those water filled, insulated boxes. In that way, the koi fish could be acclimated to the water in their new environment.

The suitability of those chosen supplies is evident in the actions of the transferred koi. Those animals are now swimming happily in their new habitat.
