Koi Fish Ponds - How to Successfully Create One

A lot of individuals or even families are overwhelmed in collecting this stunning and bright colored fish nowadays. This leads to a lot of questions regarding how to create koi fish ponds. Creating a pond is as enjoyable and as easy as collecting them. I will show you how to create a perfect pond for your collection. Remember that with a proper habitat koi can live for decades and may even attain its potential growth of up to a meter long.

What are the basic things that a hobbyist should know in successfully creating a good koi pond?

1. Always remember that the depth of the pond is an essential factor. The minimum requirement of a fish pond is about four feet deep, but it is best to give them a six or even better and 8 feet deep pond. A deep pond ensures koi's protection from raccoons, cats, and other animals to pick on them for food. In addition, a deeper pond also aids in keeping the water cool even during the summer.

2. Whenever space is not a problem, make the fish pond as large as possible. Small size or limited space is not suitable for koi. Bear in mind that in just a matter of time the carp can grow large and may not have enough room for them to swim around. With limited space it is hard to add more fish to your collections and this is hardly irresistible because as they grow their vibrant colors are undeniably so soothing and amazing that it is hard for hobbyist not to want for more.

Consequently, it is better to be prepared and build a large pond from the start rather than rebuild later adding unnecessary cost which could have been avoided. A good size would be a koi pond that can carry about ten thousand gallons of water. Of course a bigger one would be better.

3. What's good about koi is that they do not suffer much in colder weather unlike tropical fishes. However freezing the pond due to high temperature should also be avoided. Proper installation of a heater will keep maintain an opening in the ice. Another importance of a heater is that koi grows only in warm water, so in order not to hinder growth during winter a heater can keep the water temperature warm even in cold seasons.

4. Choose a spot that is not directly exposed to sunlight. The location of the pond should be with a shade whether a tree or plants or a net. Placing water lilies in the pond is also an excellent idea - they do not only add beauty to the sight but will also serve as a shade to koi. Though trees are a good source for shading the pond it should not be directly under it. It would be difficult to clean a koi pond with unstoppable falling leaves and debris. It's no joke.

5. Installing a bird net is also reasonable since a lot of birds would love to eat those brightly colored fish collections that are attractive prey moving around the water.

6. Use neither insecticides nor herbicides near the water when landscaping the pond. Just a dash or a sprinkle of it can poison those delicate koi.

7. Providing the pond with several equipment and accessories are absolutely a must to maintain a healthy, vigorous, and well-defined colored koi. Be extravagant when it comes to water pumps, filtration system, water aerator and an ultraviolet sterilizer. A homemade filter is also acceptable since koi filtration systems are really expensive.

Koi fish ponds can be successfully built with patience and with the right equipment. So before deciding to build one make sure resources are readily available.
