One of the most important, and perhaps most misunderstood, skills in Internet marketing is the ability to perform proper keyword research. Without it, your chances of long-term success in online business fall dramatically. You can have an excellent product or service to provide, you can look into many different traffic generation methods, and you can build the coolest and most attractive website ever conceived. All this would be a waste of time, however, if you didn't have a foundation in place, and that foundation is keyword research.
You see, most new online business owners need to get lots of traffic from search engines in order to succeed. You can invest in many different traffic generation strategies, including pay per click advertising, and many other forms of paid advertising. Nevertheless, this would be expensive for a new marketer on a tight budget, so the best option is usually search engine optimization. Not only does natural search engine traffic help your budget, but it also provides targeted traffic that is most likely interested in the products and services you have to offer.
When someone types in a keyword phrase like "best coffee maker reviews" into Google or other search engines, chances are that searcher is looking to buy a coffee maker. If your product review ranked well in the search engines, then this searcher would likely be interested in your articles and might ultimately purchase through your affiliate link. (Although this example has to do with promoting physical products as an affiliate, the point about targeted traffic would still hold true no matter what kind of product you are selling or promoting.)
So the first step to secure more search engine traffic is to decide what kinds of keyword phrases your potential customers would be typing into the search engines. If you know your own market (and your own products and services) well, then you should have a pretty accurate idea to begin with. Nevertheless, you can use additional advice from the Google keyword tool and similar research tools in order to find a large number of related keyword phrases.
From here, you can continue by analyzing the search volume and competition for each keyword phrase you would like to rank for. The ideal keyword phrase is, of course, one with lots of traffic but little to no competition. Unfortunately, these dream keywords are few and far between, so you have to strike a balance in order to rank well in the search engines.
